Service to the community never ends

By Sandy Wersal, Children & Youth Chairman

The American Legion Auxiliary works with the American Legion on the Children & Youth program as it is one of the four pillar programs we share. Working to make our military children’s lives better, including our local children who all need us to be good mentors. We began working with the Children and Youth program way back in 1919, that work continues today.

For Children & Youth Month in April, set up a military kids table in your post to draw attention to these children.

Our military children bear a difficult burden that most children do not. They may not always understand what’s going on when their parents deploy or get re-assigned, depending on their age; we need to be available to support where and when we can.

On April 15, we urge the communities to wear purple to show support and thank military children for their strength and sacrifices. It’s time to purple up members wear purple that day!

Why purple? Because it indicates all the branches of our military. Combination of Air Force blue, Army green, Navy blue, Marine red and Coast Guard blue all thought to combine as a single color, purple.

If you know a family with children of deployed parents make a purple basket with treats and deliver it to them, this April to acknowledge their sacrifices. Keep a watch out for Youth Hero Awards and Good Deed Awards and take time to send in a nomination.  Let’s make April a fun month!
