SAL Commander: Get involved; find out what the Detachment does

By Chuck Stone

Greetings American Legion Family,

I would like to thank the Detachment of Minnesota for placing its trust and confidence in electing me detachment commander for 2026-27. My eligibility is under my dad who served in the Army during the Korean War.

Dad had many stories about the long rides on the troop ships to and from Korea. One such story was about a very long night as the ship was up and down and side to side as it was on the edge of a typhon.

“Just imagine being on a roller coaster for about 10 hours nonstop” was how dad described it.

As many of you know I am also a dual member in the Legion and also in the Riders.

I have received a few invitations for parades and dinners. If you would like me to come to your event, please reach out to me at 507-213-7517. Don’t be afraid to leave a voice message or sent a text message. I also take emails at [email protected].

It was great to see many of you in Crystal at the Detachment Convention and Willmar at the Department Convention. I am looking forward to seeing some of you once again at National Convention in Louisville the end of August. If you pick up a Louisville Slugger souvenir, be sure to pack it in your checked baggage unless you are driving.

My project for the year is the activity funds at the eight veterans homes throughout the state. The goal is to present each home with at least $1,000 check. The only donation that is too small is the one NOT made. Please write checks or to American Legion Foundation and in the memo write Fund 99 SAL Commanders Project.

The John Zgoda Disabled Hunts have been a major part of my fall calendar each year. They will once again be an event I will not miss. If you have questions on the hunts or wish to donate, please reach out to the hunt staff. The staff will be holding a lottery type drawing on Aug. 15 for six deer hunters and three alternates. They will also draw for two turkey hunters and two alternates.

Remember to thank a veteran for the freedom we have today and thank a member currently serving protecting that freedom for tomorrow.

Chuck Stone of Owatonna Squadron 77 is the commander of the SAL Detachment of Minnesota.
