Minnesota Sons of The American Legion Spring Conference Highlights Membership, Service, and Growth
St. Paul, MN — The Detachment of Minnesota Sons of The American Legion leaders and members gathered for their Spring Conference to review membership progress, recognize program achievements, and outline priorities for the year ahead. SAL Detachment Command Jeremy Copher opened the meeting at Arcade Phalen American Legion Post 577 with the executive board meeting on Friday March 20 and closed the session on Saturday March 21. The Detachment emphasized early renewals, stronger reporting, youth engagement, and continued support for veterans and their families. Greetings was brought to the conference by Post, Squadron, and District leaders, along with Department Commander Linda Dvorak and Department President Robin Dorf.

Membership Performance and Growth
Membership Chair Dave Arend stressed that membership remains a top priority across the detachment. Minnesota reported 10,684 members and a national ranking of 21st as of March 21, with a renewal rate of 81.9%. Leaders encouraged squadrons to renew members early and use online tools to help reduce processing delays and improve accuracy.
The detachment’s goal is to reach 12,060 members this year, leaving a gap of approximately 1,376 members. District membership levels varied, with the Ninth District leading at 94.11% and the Second District nearing full strength with only 33 renewals needed to reach 100%.

Awards and Recognition
The conference also highlighted recognition programs designed to encourage recruitment and participation. Members can earn recruiter pins for signing up five new members and Blue Brigade jackets for recruiting 30. Minnesota currently leads the Midwest region with 10 recruiter pins awarded this year.
Family-focused recognition programs, such as the Auxiliary Family Three Award, continue to encourage cooperation across the American Legion family. Leaders also noted that new squadron charters are moving through the process more quickly, with several new squadrons established in Minnesota during the 2025-26 membership year.
Finance and Operations
Financial oversight and operational planning were also discussed. Detachment Finance Officer Steve Bilderback reviewed the operating fund statements and noted that future finance committee meetings may be held by Zoom to improve attendance and support quorum requirements.
A dues increase for Detachment at Large Squad 1982 members from $13 to $25 (effective with the 2027 membership year) was approved to align with other squadrons and help maintain financial stability. Leaders said the adjustment supports the long-term health of the organization and protects membership value.
Programs and Youth Engagement
Members reviewed ongoing support for youth programs, including Boys State, Flying Flags for Heroes, Legionville Safety camp, and the annual Disabled Veteran Deer and Turkey hunts. Leaders encouraged each squadron to sponsor at least one camper at Legionville each year and noted the importance of supporting youth safety education and outdoor training opportunities. Pamphlets for this year’s hunts will be available shortly for distribution to the Posts and communities.
The conference also addressed the Brain Science Foundation, which supports research related to PTSD, Gulf War illness, and dementia at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center. Members were encouraged to increase donations to sustain this work.
The National Commanders Challenge is available to any Squadron who wants to support The American Legion Four Pillars. To qualify, a Squadron will need to donate $1 per member for the following:
- Child Wellbeing Foundation (CWF)
- Operation Comfort Warriors (OCW)
- Department of MN Boys State Program
- Donate to the sponsor of a local Blood Drive or host one of your own.
Legislative and Advocacy Priorities
Legislative priorities included charitable gaming tax relief, property tax issues affecting post homes, and stronger support for veterans’ benefits.
Leaders said the detachment remains committed to advocacy that improves the lives of veterans and strengthens communities across Minnesota.
Looking Ahead
Upcoming events include the Detachment of Minnesota Convention in Crystal on June 26-27, the Department of Minnesota Convention in Wilmer on July 9-11, the National Convention in Louisville on August 28-30, and the Fall Conference in Saint Cloud on October 22-24.
