Minnesota SAL is the largest detachment of all

Minnesota has an active and vibrant Sons of the American Legion Detachment, and this year we have finally broken the 12,000-member mark.

When we started the 2025-26 membership year, our total for 2025 was 11,654 members. The detachment set a goal of 12,060 members and National HQ set a goal of 12,015 members. As of the July 1 national membership report, Minnesota has 12,019 members and is sitting at 100.03 percent.

Now, while that number might not seem like a lot compared to Legion membership, for the Sons of the American Legion it is pretty big.

The Sons, as of that same July 1 report, nationally have 401,623 members. With Minnesota having 12,019 members, that number puts Minnesota in 9th place nationally in membership size.

Out of 55 detachments in the nation, only 10 detachments have more than 10,000 members. Currently only 19 detachments have 5,000 members or more, and that’s out of 55 detachments!

Regionally, Minnesota is now in second place 100.03 percent, with South Dakota in first place 105.53 percent. Keep in mind, in our region, Minnesota has almost 50 percent more membership than our next closest detachment.

I have no doubts that Minnesota will hit our detachment goal of 12,060 members before the end of the year.
