Membership Director: Do you know that most important Legionnaire in The American Legion is you?

By James Olson

My Fellow Legionnaires,

As Commander Pam Krill and I began preparing for this membership year, we found ourselves returning to one simple thought.

Behind every membership report, behind every renewal, behind every membership goal, there is a Legionnaire.

That realization inspired this year’s theme:

“You Matter. Every Legionnaire. Every Veteran. Every Family. Every Community. Every Day.”

Those words are more than a slogan. They are a reminder of who we are and why The American Legion has remained strong for more than a century.

James Olson

Since 1919, generations of Legionnaires have strengthened our organization not simply by paying dues, but by serving veterans, mentoring future leaders, supporting our communities, and living the values that define The American Legion. That same responsibility now belongs to us.

We often talk about membership in terms of numbers. Membership numbers are important because they help us measure the health of our organization. But before there is ever a number, there is a person. A Legionnaire who chose to continue serving after military service ended. A veteran looking for purpose and fellowship. A family supporting that mission. A community strengthened because Legionnaires answered the call to serve.

When people know they matter, they become involved. They serve. They lead. They mentor. They encourage others. They build stronger posts and stronger communities.

The future of The American Legion will not be determined simply by how many veterans are eligible to join. It will be determined by how many veterans discover that they belong among us.

That responsibility belongs to every Legionnaire.

Each of us has the opportunity to welcome another veteran, encourage another Legionnaire, thank someone whose service often goes unnoticed, or simply remind another person that they are appreciated.

The American Legion has never been built one membership campaign at a time. It has always been built one Legionnaire, one relationship and one act of service at a time.

That is my hope for this membership year — that every Legionnaire across the Department of Minnesota will help create a culture where people know they matter.

Before our next conversation…

Let’s remind one Legionnaire that they matter.

Let’s call someone we haven’t seen in a while.

Let’s thank someone whose quiet service often goes unnoticed.

Let’s invite a veteran to coffee.

One conversation may change someone’s future.

Until the next edition, remember…

You Matter. Every Legionnaire. Every Veteran. Every Family. Every Community. Every Day.

Because when people know they matter, The American Legion grows stronger.
