Letter: Coach training available for junior air rifle

By Carl Wilson
Junior Shooting Sports is a gun safety and marksmanship program of The American Legion. Participants compete in 3-position air rifle competitions in the Precision and Sporter categories. National champions are crowned annually.

Dear posts of the Minnesota American Legion,

Minnesota Junior Shooting Sports wants you to be aware of an opportunity for posts to launch a Junior Shooting Sports program. The key to launching a program is having a coach. Our American Legion Junior Shooting Sports is a youth air-rifle program typically held indoors.

There is an upcoming NRA Level 1 class at the Anoka American Legion on Dec. 28-29 for anybody who is interested in coaching Junior Air Rifle sports. The course will be taught by an instructor from Fort Wayne, Ind.. The cost of the class will be $100 to cover the books. The instructors’ fees have been taken care of through a grant.

This is an outstanding opportunity for posts wanting to take part in this growing American Legion program. We do ask that those who are interested be affiliated with an American Legion Shooting program and a have an NRA number.

For those of you who are interested in taking the course, please contact Minnesota Centershots with your name, phone number, email address and NRA number as soon as you can. It might be full by the time this copy of the Legionnaire arrives in your mailbox. We also contacted commanders and adjutants about this opportunity.

To register, send in your info to mncentershots10.9@gmail.com.

If anyone has questions they can also contact me at carl196545@hotmail.com or by phone at 320-304-5333.

Thanks for all you do for The American Legion!

Carl Wilson
