Legion Riders raise nearly $70,000
Fund 85 Ride had 75 participants
WASECA — The Minnesota American Legion Riders in August collected $61,691 during the Fund 85 Ride — and an additional $7,300 after the conclusion — for a grand total of $69,991.
There were about 75 participants on the Fund 85 Run in late July. The route launched from New Ulm and stayed overnight in Montevideo and St. Peter before wrapping up in Waseca, stopping at posts along the way for meals or breaks.
The run raises money for the Minnesota Veterans Assistance Fund, which is Fund 85 of the Minnesota American Legion Foundation.
“This remarkable accomplishment reflects the generosity of veteran service organizations, communities, businesses and individuals who recognize the importance of honoring and supporting those who have served our nation. Every mile traveled and every donation collected helped turn the Rider’s commitment into meaningful assistance for Minnesota veterans in need,” said Minnesota ALR Director Duane Mabon.
The Minnesota Veterans Assistance Fund allows the Minnesota American Legion to work with local posts to aid veterans who are struggling with housing, food, unemployment and mounting bills to get them back on their feet. Each veteran is eligible for up to $5,000 in assistance during their lifetime.
“The annual ride is more than a journey on the road; it is a demonstration of camaraderie, service and dedication to the veteran community. The Minnesota American Legion Riders are proud to continue this tradition and grateful to everyone who contributed to making this year’s ride such an outstanding success,” Mabon said.
On Aug. 15, the Riders came together once again, this time at Moorhead Post 21. It was for their annual Fund 84 Ride.
This one raises funds for the national mission of the American Legion Riders. Currently, they are raising funds for the American Legion Veterans & Children’s Foundation.
Ninth District ALR Director Doug Dietrich and Plummer Chapter 623 Director Shawn “Oggy” Carlson organized the ride.
“From planning the route, stops, meals, overnights, flyers, etc., everyone who contributed to this endeavor, I want you to know I appreciate the time and dedication you put into making this annual ride successful,” Mabon said.
He thanked donors for both rides. The Fund 84 Ride raised $25,000.
