Endorsement: Bares backed for department sergeant-at-arms

Joseph E. Bares has been endorsed by American Legion Robert Patterson Post 3 in Jordan, Minnesota for the position of Department of Minnesota sergeant-at-arms.

Bares is a Paid Up For Life member and a 30-year member of The American Legion, and he is also a dual member of the Sons of The American Legion. He served honorably in the United States Navy for five years and four months.

He has been married to his wife, Holly, for over 32 years. They have two children: Zachary, who is married to Molly, and they recently welcomed their daughter Logan Colleen on Jan. 11, 2026; and Haille, who is engaged to Hunter and resides in Elk Point, S.D.

At the Post 3 level, Bares has served as adjutant for two years and previously served eight years as commander. He is currently in his eighth year as post membership director. He has also been deeply involved with youth programs, serving approximately 15 years as post chairman for Boys State and Girls State, helping send about 42 students to the programs during that time. In addition, he served approximately 15 years as the post’s Oratorical chairman.

At the 3rd District level, Bares has served on the Finance Committee and was Boys State chairman for eight years. He has served as East Central Substate Division II director for American Legion Baseball for five years.

At the Department of Minnesota level, he is currently serving as department membership director for 2025–2026 and works on Resolutions Assignment and Credentials. He has also assisted with the Minnesota Division II State American Legion Baseball Tournament for more than 15 years, in addition to running substate tournaments over the years.

Through decades of service to veterans, youth, and his community, Bares continues to demonstrate dedication to the mission and values of The American Legion.
