As an American Legion member in the Department of Minnesota, attending the Minnesota American Legion College at Camp Ripley in April is an invaluable opportunity to expand your knowledge, develop your leadership skills, and connect with fellow Legion members from across the state.

Minnesota American Legion College

The Minnesota American Legion College offers comprehensive training and education for Legionnaires aspiring to take on greater leadership roles within their posts, districts, and the department. Over the course of several days, attendees participate in interactive workshops and discussions covering a wide range of topics, including:

  • American Legion History, Mission, and Programs
    Gain a deeper understanding of the Legion’s roots, its national and local impact, and the programs that serve veterans, their families, and communities.
  • Post Management and Officer Responsibilities
    Learn about effective post operations, including best practices for managing your post, engaging members, and meeting the needs of your community.
  • Effective Communication and Public Speaking
    Develop the skills to speak confidently, engage audiences, and communicate the Legion’s mission and vision effectively, whether you’re addressing your post or advocating at the state or national level.
  • Legislative Advocacy and Grassroots Engagement
    Understand how to engage with lawmakers, influence policy, and advocate for veterans’ issues, using your position as a Legion leader to push for positive change.
  • Strategic Planning and Goal setting
    Master the art of creating actionable plans that support the success of your post and the larger mission of the American Legion.

Regardless of your current position or experience level, the Minnesota American Legion College equips you with the knowledge and tools to become a more effective leader, able to drive positive change within your local post and the broader Legion community.

Leadership Development at Camp Ripley

Under the guidance of experienced Department of Minnesota instructors, you will have the opportunity to:

Department Legion College Cost Overview:

  • $200.00 per applicant: This fee covers:
    • Housing for three nights
    • Classroom and technology access
    • The first night’s social gathering
    • Course materials

Funding:

  • Legion posts and districts are encouraged to cover the $200.00 fee for their members, potentially making the program more accessible for applicants and helping to support future leadership.

Meals:

  • Applicants are responsible for their own meals during the weekend.
  • Camp Ripley dining facilities are available for breakfast, lunch, and dinner at an affordable cost.
  • There is also a local restaurant located just outside the Camp Ripley gate.
