Mail Call: Tax exclusion for 50 percent?

By Neil Morey

Regarding the Homestead Property Tax Exclusion for 100 percent and 70 percent disabled veterans, how about 50 percent disabled veterans?

What should be done is have Homestead taxes eliminated. The value when purchased should be considered for taxes rather than taxing on present value.

I would like to see the real estate taxes be discounted by the disability of 17 percent, 20 percent, 50 percent, 70 percent and 100 percent used as a deduction on the homestead taxes.

What is your thinking about trying that on the lawmakers?

Editor’s note: The Minnesota Commanders’ Task Force, of which the Legion is a part, has sought for more than a decade to adjust the existing tax exclusions to account for rising home values. Adding any new ones creates a bigger mountain to climb and could sink the effort altogether. In other words, it would be nice to have, but politically it is highly unlikely.
