Counselor: Minnesota Boys State is not a military camp

We experienced a great week in June at St. John’s University.  We also learned there are misconceptions about the American Legion Boys State program.

Though sponsored by military veterans through the Legion, it is not a military camp. Explanations of what The American Legion is and the programs it sponsors is all there is in relation to the military.

The week entails political work, but there is no influence toward liberal or conservative views. The young men come up with their own positions based on their own beliefs. No advisers from Boys State or speakers that visit pressure their views one way or another.

Greeting the young men at registration and bidding them farewell after the last session, it is rewarding to see their growth in camaraderie and confidence. Moving from city government, to county, then state, the understanding shown in such a short time is gratifying for counselors.

Becoming city councilors, county commissioners and legislators, the boys are now more empathetic to those who represent us at all levels of government and organizations.

Minnesota’s representatives to Boys Nation later this month will glean more knowledge and experiences at the federal level.

Much appreciated were the Legion visitors this year. We encourage more in the future. Another Legionnaire joined the staff this year. Are there any others out there interested in taking part next June?
