“Taps” is a listing of brief obituaries in The Minnesota Legionnaire featuring Minnesota American Legion members who have transferred to Post Everlasting. It is a way to honor and recognize their service to the community, state and nation.

Powers, Robert A.

Normally, the Legionnaire has a one-year rule for submissions. However, the Post 620 commander asked for a special exception considering this man’s record, and that they had been unaware of his passing. “Bob” Powers was a member of the 3rd Marine Raider Battalion and subsequently the 4th Marines. He saw combat in Guadalcanal, Bougainville and Guam. He received a battlefield commission on Okinawa and was awarded the Navy Cross. He returned to St. Paul to pursue his education under the G.I. Bill and was recalled to active duty as a 2nd lieutenant in the 7th Marines. His platoon was part of the Inchon Landing and the Battle of Chosin Reservoir, where he received his third Purple Heart. After, he remained in the Marine Reserve as a commanding officer of the 26th Rifle Company at Fort Snelling, retiring as a captain.
