A forklift removes the USS Ward Gun 3 from the grounds of the State Capitol Complex on Sept. 2 during a ceremony observing 80 years since V-J Day. The New Prague Veterans Honor Guard presented the colors. Commonly called the Ward Gun, it fired the first successful American shots upon an enemy in World War II. The historical piece was shipped to the new 32-acre Minnesota Military & Veterans Museum outside of Camp Ripley.
