3rd District Commander’s October 2024 Report

By Joe Tappainer

Membership.

Today I’m going to address American Legion membership and why it is important.

I think of the vision of the veterans who worked so hard to get us the G.I. Bill in the 1940s and the far-reaching effects of this legislation. Many of us received higher education because of the G.I. Bill.

It bettered and broadened our lives in so many ways. Not to mention that ultimately, it is one of the bills that has paid back for itself by putting us in higher tax brackets.

In recent history, because of veterans supporting the PACT Act of 2022, it was passed by Congress. This is to compensate the women and men who were exposed to burn pits and other toxic chemicals during their time in the service of our country. This was passed in large part because veterans took the initiative to call and urge their congressional delegates to pass this bill. This was done in the spirit of veterans helping other veterans.

The American Legion programs and influence are significant. To find out how large, I urge you to take the online Amerian Legion Basic Training Course that covers five topics: history and organization; Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation; National Security; Americanism; and Children & Youth.

This helped me understand and address the wide breath of good programs the American Legion covers and supports.  These aren’t just to support veterans, but our local communities as well.  These are terrific selling points we can offer new, perspective and returning veterans.

We need to get that message out there, for others to know, to participate in and enjoy the benefits of the American Legion. And to carry on the legacy that allows veterans to live with dignity.

Remember we have a 65 percent membership goal to match by Veterans Day. Let’s use our time and talent as a team to surpass this goal.

I look forward to seeing and meeting you all at the different functions and events throughout the 3rd District this year.

Still serving and changing lives. Until next time.
