Letter: A poem for the airmen veterans
This poem is titled, “We Serve: A Veteran’s Poem.”
When I thought about my life, I knew I wanted to serve.
But how to serve?
Conservation, Peace Corps, Red Cross?
All commendable, all important, but I wanted more.
I searched my soul for the answer and I knew I found it.
I wanted to be an Airman, I wanted to serve.
I wanted to serve my country in the most unselfish way.
I wanted to serve in the U.S. Military.
I wanted to be brave
I wanted to defend our country.
I wanted to protect our freedom,
I wanted to be an Airman, I wanted to serve.
I wanted to understand valor.
I wanted to be vigilant,
I wanted to be courageous.
I wanted to be strong.
I wanted to persevere.
I wanted to be an Airman. I wanted to serve.
I wanted to dedicate my life to something bigger than myself.
I wanted to make a difference.
I wanted to make myself and my family proud.
I knew that by serving there could be a risk.
I accepted that risk and I embraced my determination.
I wanted to be an Airman, I wanted to serve.
Yes, I became an Airman. Yes, I served.
