5th District commander’s July 2024 report

District conventions are completed and new district officers are champing at the bit to get going on their mission. Congratulations to them all.

The 5th District Convention was held in a new venue and very well-received. Great thanks to our team for organization an awesome event in a new location. Special thanks to: Gary Martin, Shawn Davis, and Matt Verkuilen — awesome job.

The 5th District Memorial Day Ceremony was a huge success. Master of ceremony and chief organizer Joe Bayer did an outstanding job indeed. The Minneapolis Veterans Home served as a reverent and patriotic location for such a solemn occasion. Speakers included Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Rep. Ilhan Omar, and Department Commander Paul Hassing.

Our 5th District Project was Every Third Saturday, an organization assisting veterans right here in our neighborhood. I would like to thank all who donated to this awesome cause.

Tom and Jessy McKenna graciously accepted contributions from 5th District American Legion and the 5th District Auxiliary. They serve as wonderful stewards on behalf of our veterans in need in Minnesota’s urban core. Thank you, Tom and Jessy.

Now it’s off to Wilmar for the Department Convention. I’m looking forward to catching up with all my friends across Minnesota, but wondering what Carla Tappainer has up her sleeve for re-admittance to the Past Commanders Club!
