3rd District Commander’s November 2024 Report

By Joe Tappainer

The summer is over, and the membership races are hot and heavy. The 2nd District was in first place at the Fall Conference, and the 3rd District was in fifth place. However, it is early and we have a few months to go. The percentages are very close. We hope to catch up.

That doesn’t mean we can sit on our haunches. We need to hit the 1982s and 1982ADs. The races are important, but it is more important to help the struggling posts.

The vice commanders should be trying to visit each post at least once by the midwinter get-togethers. It is understood that that is not possible in some areas because posts meet on the same night; however, that doesn’t stop you from picking up the phone and talking to that post you can’t visit. Stay ahead of the game by being proactive and contacting each and every post.

I attended the Harvest Rally, which had a great turn out, but many of the people didn’t like it that it was separate from the Camporee. We always had such a great time at Camporee! That is something to consider.

Do these rallies serve a purpose anymore? They cost time and money. Do we really get a return on investment or are these rallies just a remnant from the past? Before MyLegion.org, these rallies were the place to turn in membership.

Eight years ago, commanders were pushing to not hold onto the membership to turn in at the rallies but mail it in right away. Then six years ago the push was to use MyLegion.org. So, the question I put before you is: Do the rallies still serve a purpose? Do we get a good return on investment?

This is something that we should talk about and discuss. Are there possibly other events that we can do? Please contact me if you have any ideas!
