In a well-played game Aug. 1, Hutchinson scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to beat White Bear 5-1. Hayden Welsch, thr Hutchinson starter gave up five hits in 7 1/3 innings. White Bear. Evan Newlander had 11 strikeouts for the Bears before departing. Neither Welsch nor Newlander were involved in the decision.

Nine runs in the first inning lifted Hastings over Sauk Rapids in an elimination game Aug 1. There were 22 hits in the contest – 12 by Hastings and 10 by Sauk Rapids. Lukas Niederkorn led Hastings with three hits and four RBIs. The winning pitcher was Charlie Meyers, who allowed four hits in three innings.

Two players headed for St. Cloud State University this fall hooked up in a pitchers’ battle Aug. 1 at St. Michael. Parker Erickson went nine innings for East Grand Forks, throwing a four-hitter. Karl Schiebe of Hopkins matched him pitch for pitch before coming out in the seventh inning. An error in the top of the ninth on an infield grounder gave East Grand Forks the only run of the game.

In a well-pitched game, Grand Rapids stayed unbeaten in state play with a 2-0 win over Alexandria Aug. 1. Winning pitcher Sam Dick of Grand Rapids tossed a six-hitter, throwing 57 strikes on 83 pitches Griffin Wimmer pitched a top-notch game for Alexandria. Caleb Gunderson went two-for-three to lead Grand Rapids’ attack. He had one RBI. Oliver Spahn had the other. Neither team made an error.

Winning pitcher Keegan Hutson had command of the strike zone while Carson Schroder went three-for-three to lead Shakopee’s attack. Ryder Peace added two hits and drove in four runs. Colton Jenks and Kaden Olson each added two hits. Kyle Albrecht led New Ulm Gold with two hits.

St. Michael held off Hopkins 7-3 to continue in the State Legion Baseball Tournament Aug. 1. Playing on their home field, the Mikes built an early lead with two runs in the second inning and added four more in the fifth on a series of hits. Lincoln Rink pitched 6 1/3 innings to get the win for St. Michael. He scattered seven hits. Gavin Becker led the Mikes with two hits. Rob Shull and Eli Charney had two hits each for Hopkins.

Osseo finally solved the Farmington problem and beat the Tigers 10-4 Aug. 1 in an early evening game. Cooper Skov was the winning pitcher. Farmington had previously defeated Osseo in the state championship game last year and in the first round of state play this year. Gavin Phenow went four-for-four to lead Osseo. The key to victory was a nine-run fifth inning.
